WhatsApp officially rolls out forward message limit in India to curb fake news

Amidst efforts to clamp down on circulation of fake news, instant messaging app WhatsApp has officially rolled out 5 forward message limit in India.
Henceforth, Indian users will not be allowed to forward more than five chats at once.
The forward limit was introduced by the instant messaging app last month.
The company will also remove the quick forward button on the media messages, Whatsapp had said in a blog.
"A few years back we added a feature to WhatsApp that lets you forward a message to multiple chats at once. Today, we're launching a test to limit forwarding that will apply to everyone using WhatsApp. In India - where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world - we'll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we'll remove the quick forward button next to media messages," WhatsApp had noted in its blogpsot.
It further sadi, "We believe that these changes - which we'll continue to evaluate - will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app. We are deeply committed to your safety and privacy which is why WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, and we'll continue to improve our app with features like this one."
WhatsApp has received flak from the Indian government over fake news and false information being circulated on its messaging platform. Such messages have incited mob-fury, triggering multiple cases of lynching across the country.
The government also warned the company that mediums used for propagation of rumours are liable to be treated as 'abettors' and can face legal consequences if they remain "mute spectators".
WhatsApp had previously stated that it had launched new safety features, including a label that clearly identifies forwarded messages and controls for group conversations in the last few weeks.
Rumours on WhatsApp have sparked off a spate of incidents involving mob fury, including one where five men were lynched on the suspicion of being child lifters in Maharashtra's Rainpada village of Dhule district.
The Supreme Court too had asked parliament to consider enacting a new law to effectively deal with incidents of mob lynching, saying "horrendous acts of mobocracy" cannot be allowed to become a new norm.

San Francisco: After incorporating the facial recognition feature in iPhone X, Apple could be replacing its Touch ID in Mac by Face ID with gesture controls in the future as the tech giant has got a fresh patent to the same effect.
The patent granted to Apple on Tuesday suggests that the "computer may apply a face detection algorithm at step 92 in order to detect the subject's face of depth map", 9to5Mac reported.
This patent suggests how body language more generally -- head, torso and arm -- could be used to signal intent to the Mac.
This is, however, not the first patent application Apple made for facial recognition on the Mac.
One predating the launch of iPhone X described a way of allowing Macs to automatically log users in, even if the devices were in sleep mode when users approached them, the report said, adding that the scope of the new patent is a little broader.

Google is far from announcing its next-in-line Pixel 3 XL device, but an excited blogger from Ukraine appears to have released the photos of the upcoming flagship smartphone.
The blogger has posted the photos of the Pixel 3 XL, complete with its packaging, and wired USB-C Pixel Buds, leaving almost nothing to the imagination of Pixel fans.
As spotted by Android Police, the images hint at a big notch on the top front of the smartphone. Another image shows that the Pixel 3 XL will run Android 9.0 Pie out-of-the-box, and come powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC with 3.46GB of RAM.
It is little surprising to see such a meagre amount of RAM in the flagship model.
What will mark a shift in Google`s packaging is the inclusion of the headphones in-the-box. It appears to be the first wired version of the Pixel Buds.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launched, coming to India on August 24

Sounding the bugle for its annual warfare with Apple right on its home turf, Samsung on Thursday launched its flagship Galaxy Note 9 -- a device with a mammoth 1TB memory, bigger battery and a Bluetooth-equipped S Pen.
The smartphone will be available globally from August 24 and for the India market, it will be manufactured at Samsung's largest mobile manufacturing plant in Noida that was recently inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 6.4-inch Note 9 comes in four colours and two variants -- 6GB RAM and 128GB in-built internal memory (expandable up to 512GB) and 8GB RAM with 512GB ROM that can be expanded up to 1TB with an additional 512GB microSD card -- a delight for the gamers and heavy-duty users.
"The Note has always been our showcase for premium technology and industry defining innovations. It is designed for a level of performance power and intelligence that today's power users need," D.J. Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Samsung Electronics, said at the jam-packed Brooklyn's Barclays Center in New York City.
Both variants of the phablet will arrive in India by the end of this month and the price and exact availability date will be announced on August 10. However, not all the four colour models may initially make their way to India.
"The pricing will play a bigger role in deciding whether Samsung wants to fight the Chinese players or continue its focus on the premium customers in India," Satish Meena, Senior Forecast Analyst at Forrester Research, told IANS over phone.
The device that runs OS Android 8.1 (Oreo) will have the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip (SoC) for the US customers and the models powered by Samsung's very own "Exynos 9 Series 9810" chips will head to the rest of the world, including India.
The device will sport dual camera system (12MP+12MP) with dual optical image stabilisation (OIS) at the rear -- with 2 times more powerful optical zoom and up to 10 times powerful digital zoom -- and an 8MP front shooter.
Note 9 with Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display houses 4000mAh battery -- 21 per cent bigger that Note 8 -- that is paired with fast-charging technology compatible with both wired and wireless charging.
When it comes to Stylus Pen (the company calls it S Pen), there is much more to experience this time.
"S Pen now has remote control functionality along with Bluetooth connectivity and extremely fast charging," the company executive explained.
"S Pen can control anything, from YouTube or photo gallery to operating the phone camera. It can guide entire presentations at office meetings. We have opened software development kit (SDK) for S Pen and will soon have more applications and features," he added.
The fingerprint scanner is comfortably located just below the rear camera system.
Note 9 also comes with dust and waterproof IP68 rating (including S Pen) and houses "Samsung Knox" enterprise mobile security solution pre-installed for enhanced security.
The flagship smartphone has also retained the iconic 3.5-mm headphone jack.

11 useful Android 9 Pie features you shouldn’t overlook

Google has officially released Android 9 Pie, the latest big update of the company’s mobile operating system. It’s got a new look, gesture navigation, more AI smarts, and, if you sign up for the beta, Digital Wellbeing tools to help you gain a better understanding of your smartphone usage. There’s other legitimately helpful stuff in there, too, like adaptive battery, which learns your usage patterns and restricts the amount of juice that rarely opened apps can use up.

I’m not going to discuss any of those things today. They’ll be covered in our full review of Pie. (Don’t we all love reviewing pie, after all?)

Instead, I want to highlight some of the cooler, under-the-radar features that Google built into Android 9.0.

It’s a Bluetooth speaker party

Android 9 Pie allows the user to pair “up to five Bluetooth devices and switch between these devices seamlessly.” If a phone call comes in, Google says that Android P will route it to any Bluetooth speaker or paired audio accessory that’s capable of handling calls. Android O supported two Bluetooth audio connections at once. But now? Let your heart be your guide.

Android Pie remembers your volume preference for each Bluetooth device

Speaking of Bluetooth, we’ve all had that ear-piercing moment when your wireless headphones or your car’s audio system just blast sound cranked up to 11 when you first connect them to your phone. No longer. Android 9.0 remembers the last volume level for paired devices.

Google added a rotate button to the navigation bar that only shows up when you need it

This might sound a little confusing, but it’s pretty great. If you’re like me, you probably disable Android’s auto-screen-rotate to prevent your phone from switching between portrait and landscape orientation when you don’t want it to. In Android 9 Pie, Google has added a nice touch that’s meant just for us.

With Pie, whenever an app is open that supports landscape and you turn your phone that way, you’ll see a new rotation lock icon pop up in the navigation bar to the far right. Tap it, and the app will rotate. This does not change the overall system setting. Just keep in mind that you're actually locking that app to landscape when you tap the icon. To switch back, just rotate your phone to portrait and tap it again.

Easily see which apps recently sent you notifications and which of them interrupt you most frequently

Did a random app hit you with an annoying or totally useless notification? Even if you didn’t address it at the moment, Android Pie makes it simple to see which apps have recently pinged you and stop it from happening again.

Go to Settings —> Apps & notifications. Then tap on “notifications” near the bottom. The next screen will show you the apps that have recently displayed a notification.

If you tap on “see all from the last 7 days,” you’ll get an option that’s potentially even more useful. Instead of sorting them by most recent, you can pick “most frequent” to get a surprisingly and maybe frustrating understanding of which apps pester you the most.

Android Pie suggests turning off notifications that you frequently dismiss

If Android 9.0 notices that you routinely swipe away an app’s notifications without ever tapping into them, the system will show a prompt asking if you’d prefer to just shut off notifications for that particular app instead of swiping over and over again.

There’s a new, helpful Accessibility Menu

Google has added a new Accessibility Menu to Pie that, when enabled, gets its own icon in the bottom navigation bar. The Accessibility Menu provides easier-to-reach shortcuts (and larger tap targets) for performing common functions like triggering Google Assistant, opening the app switcher, pulling down the quick settings / notification shade, taking screenshots, and more.
